First Italian Winner of Flanders
The 33rd edition of the Tour of Flanders was held April 10, 1949.
Race Status:
A 5-riders breakaway went clear in the early kms.
Another five chasers bridged across to the breakaway. They rode well together but the chasering peloton reconnected with the leaders with 50 kms to go.
Through the final of 3 tough climbs, Fiorenzo Magni (Wilier) and Louis Caput (Olympia) held a slim lead.
The combined break came back together to form a reduced peloton. Another regrouping occurred on the outskirts of Wetteren when 16 chasers caught the two leaders.
Eighteen riders rode onto the cobbled finishing straight to contest the sprint for victory. Powerful Italian Fiorenzo Magni attacked using his superior closing speed to gain the prestigious Tour of Flanders victory in 1949. Valere Ollivier (Bertin) and Flanderian Briek Schotte (Alcyon) finished second and third respectively.

SPECIAL NOTE: Magni became the first non-Belgian winner of the Tour of Flanders in 25 years (Heiri Suter (Sui) in 1923).
